“An individual dies when he ceases to be surprised.” -Abraham Joshua Heschel

I find myself attracted to the margins. To what I missed seeing - the wonder, the awe, the surprise in ordinary places. My photography is an invitation to see through my eyes rather than through my thoughts in the philosophical tradition of phenomenology and is influenced by the contemplative visions at the heart of all great religious traditions. Use the links below to explore the work through my eyes.

Christ in the Desert

The Benedictine Monastery of Christ in the Desert was founded in 1964 in the high desert of northern New Mexico. It is set in the spectacular Chama River Canyon, dramatically facing the Chama River on one side, and backed by red stone canyon walls that rise more than 600 feet. The Monastery is adobe mud, with newer portions using straw bale construction. It produces all its electricity. It is said to be the most remote monastery in the western hemisphere. With approximately 40 monks, they have founded or helped eight monasteries in the US, Mexico and South Africa. Guests of all faiths are warmly welcomed, following St Benedict’s admonition that all persons be welcomed as Christ. Follow Route 84 north of Abiquiu, heading west on U.S. Forest Service Road 151 for about 13 miles. https://christdesert.org
